ProfitShield guide

Can I set a minimum margin on Shopify checkout and block orders below it?

Short answer

Yes, but Shopify has no setting for it. It needs a checkout validation Function that reads your product costs, and an app can provide that. ProfitShield lets you set a profit floor per store, flags orders below it in Flag mode, and on paid plans (from $19 a month) blocks them at checkout.

Why Shopify does not do this by itself

Shopify checkout rules can limit quantities or order value, but they do not know your product costs, shipping and payment fees. A margin rule needs those numbers at the moment of checkout, so it has to be built with a Shopify Function in an app.

How ProfitShield does it

The recommended path is to start in Flag mode, look at which orders would have been blocked, then switch Block on when you are comfortable.

  • You set a profit floor for the store.
  • ProfitShield works out the order's net profit from product cost, shipping, payment fees, discounts and packaging.
  • In Flag mode, the default, orders below the floor are marked for review and nothing is stopped.
  • In Block mode, on paid plans, a Shopify checkout validation Function stops the order before it is placed.

Limits to know about

  • Profit is only as accurate as the product costs you enter or import.
  • Blocking at checkout is Shopify-only. The standalone web app can import data and show profit, but it cannot block checkout.
  • It does not need Shopify Plus or an ERP, per its App Store listing.

Questions

Which plan do I need to block orders at checkout?

Protect ($19 a month) or higher. The Free plan includes Flag mode only.

Will blocking turn away good customers?

It blocks orders that fall below the profit floor you chose. Start in Flag mode, review what would be blocked, and set the floor to suit your margins before switching Block on.

Can I do this without an app?

Only by building and deploying your own Shopify Function. For most stores an app is simpler.
